A program dedicated to the fight against weekend hunger in our schools that is making a difference in the lives of local children.
Each Backpack Kit Contains: 2 Entrees; 2 juice boxes (100% juice); 2 packets of instant oatmeal; 2 servings of fruit; a cracker snack; and a whole-grain snack bar. Children that participate in this needs-based program are selected by their schools' counselors. The food kits are distributed by the school counselors, and the identities of the participating students are kept confidential.
BACKPACK PROGRAM LOCATION:
Fernley Intermediate School has provided the Backpack Food Program with the space it needs for food storage and assembly.
BACKPACK PROGRAM COST:
The cost to keep a child from going hungry over the weekend is only $150.00 for the entire school year.
With The Boys & Girls Club of Fernley's help packing the food kits, the program has reduced the cost per student by about a dollar per week compared to backpack food kits that are available for purchase through the Food Bank of Northern Nevada.
